چکیده

We present results from our Parkes Multibeam H I survey of 3 loose groups of galaxies that are analogous to the Local Group. This is a survey of groups containing only spiral galaxies with mean separations of a few hundred kpc, and total areas of approximately 1 Mpc; groups similar to our own Local Group. We present a census of the H I-rich objects in these groups down to a 1σ MHI sensitivity ∼7×10 5 M⊙, as well as the detailed properties of these detections from follow-up Compact Array observations. We found 7 new H I-rich members in the 3 groups, all of which have stellar counterparts and are, therefore, typical dwarf galaxies. The ratio of low-mass to high-mass gas-rich galaxies in these groups is less than in the Local Group meaning that the “missing satellite” problem is not unique. No high-velocity cloud analogs were found in any of the groups. If HVCs in these groups are the same as in the Local Group, this implies that HVCs must be located within ∼300-400 kpc of the Milky Way.

Study of a Slice at +9 to +15 of Declination: I. the Neutral Hydrogen Content of Galaxies in Loose Groups

We examine the H I content of spiral galaxies in groups by using a catalog of loose groups of galaxies identified in a magnitude limited sample (mZ ≤ 15.7) spanning the range 8 ≤ α ≤ 18 in right ascension and +9 ≤ δ ≤ +15 in declination. The redshift completeness of the galaxy sample is ∼ 95%. No significant effect of H I depletion is found, although there may be a hint that the earliest type s...

Survey of Six Local Group Analogs: I. Survey Description and the Search for High-velocity Clouds

We have conducted an H I 21 cm emission-line survey using the Parkes 20cm multibeam instrument and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) of six loose groups of galaxies chosen to be analogs to the Local Group. The goal of this survey is to make a census of the H I-rich galaxies and high-velocity clouds (HVCs) within these groups and compare these populations with those in the Local Group...

Studying Galaxy Formation in Loose Galaxy Groups

We present the results of our HI survey of six loose groups of galaxies analogous to the Local Group. The survey was conducted using the Parkes telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array to produce a census of all the gas-rich galaxies and analogs to the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) within these groups down to MHI< 10 M⊙ as a test of models of galaxy formation. We present the HI mass fu...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
